The modern integrated development environment (IDE) provides an incredibly productive set of tools to today’s developers. Eclipse has been a very successful open platform for building IDEs, and is arguably the best known platform in the world for building software development tools. However, as the world moves to the web, things are going to change. Developers in the future will need tools which work in their browsers or their mobile platforms, and where their code and artifacts are maintained in the cloud. With this in mind, the Eclipse community has created an innovative new project called Orion and is exploring how the idioms of the web can be applied to development. This talk will explore how the lessons of Eclipse can be applied to an entirely new platform and vision for software development in the web, for the web.
